The Recreation Area encompasses the northern and western shoreline in San Francisco. The areas can be accessed by Municipal Railway (MUNI), bus system, or car. Ferries provide service to Alcatraz Island. In Marin County, the Park can be accessed from various roads off Highway 101. San Francisco may be reached by bus, Amtrak, Southern Pacific Railroad, air travel to San Francisco International Airport or Oakland International Airport.

Open Year round. Peak visitor month is August. The climate in San Francisco is mild during Winter and Summer.

The Park encompasses shoreline areas of San Francisco, Marin, and San Mateo Counties, including ocean beaches, redwood forest, lagoons, marshes, military properties, a cultural center at Fort Mason, and Alcatraz Island, site of the penitentiary.
An endless variety of recreational, cultural, and educational activities are available, including tours of Alcatraz, the National Maritime Museum at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, and cultural programs at Fort Mason Center. Major trailheads are in the Marin Headlands, Muir Woods, and Tennessee Valley. Food service facilities are available at the Fort Mason Center, The Cliff House, and Muir Woods. San Francisco and surrounding areas provide a multitude of overnight accommodations.
